You can't discuss business on the eastern shore without talking about Ocean City and the tourism industry. Melanie Pursel, the executive director of the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce knows this is an exciting place to work.

The mission of the Chamber of Commerce is to support local business. Though it is predominantly tourism, many other types of companies benefit from being in such a region.

Joining a chamber of commerce is a tried and true way for both businesses and non profits to grow. The chamber provides a variety of services, including promotions through their visitor center, print publications, website, and special events. Their visitor and conference center can be found in West Ocean City on Route fifty --- on the right --- before you get to the beach itself. They are very proud of their building. Recently they dedicated it to a dedicated Chamber member and philanthropist Eunice Q. Sorin.

The Chamber recently began an event that celebrates local businesses and the region's seaside heritage. Harbor Day at the Docks has been a collaboration of several local groups. It provides family fun and educational activities along with a show case for local artisans and seafood. The Rural Development Center has supported the Chamber as part of a network of area businesses, along with governmental, educational, and nonprofit institutions.

Through the efforts of the Chamber and other regional groups resort businesses are weathering current economic challenges. Melanie has this to suggest to people interesting starting new ventures in the Ocean City area. Entrepreneurs should invest time in good market research. Businesses that support or attract families and children will always succeed in this area which has always identified itself as a "family resort."

People who work in exciting industries tend to love their jobs. Melanie is no exception. Melanie works with a diverse group of people and types of businesses so there is always something new on the horizon.
