The mission of the Small Farm Outreach Initiative at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is to provide education, training, and programs for small farmers here on the Delmarva Peninsula. The program concentrates mostly on the Lower Shore in Maryland and Virginia, but reaches into the upper shore and across the bay. Program director, Berran Rogers, Jr. grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - (Nov. 27, 2011) - A fire of unknown origin heavily damaged a commercial greenhouse Sunday on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore campus that is leased by a private company to grow orchids.

Through the work of the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Council and its members including the Rural Development Center which is a founding member the passing of the legislation designating the Smith Island Cake as the official Maryland Cake has produced the following: How about it - National Geographic says Smith Island Cake is in the top 5 desserts in America.
We're so proud!!! All that hard work to pass Maryland Bill 315 is still paying off.

| Rural Development Center Projects From 2010-2011 |
Read highlights of the Rurual Development Center work in the last year. The Riral Development Center operates four business revolving loan funds (RLFs) in the four lower Eastern Shore counties. They have assisted with cost-shared funding for local government technical assistance projects and marketing studies.
